I didn’t start 603 In Focus because I had some big business plan. It really started back in 2017, when my oldest son, Mike, started playing sports at Coe-Brown. I brought my camera to his games — basketball, soccer, track — mostly because I loved trying to capture those split- second moments that happen once and then disappear. A big play. A hard-fought game. That look on an athlete’s face when everything clicks. Over the years, I kept shooting. When Riley played, I spent a lot of time photographing basketball and soccer. At that point, it was still mostly something I did because I enjoyed it, and because as a dad, I loved being able to capture those memories. But when Grady started playing high school sports, that’s when things really started to shift. I began sharing more photos, posting regularly on Instagram, and people started noticing. Players followed the page. Parents started tagging each other. Kids started using the photos as their profile pictures. One moment that really stuck with me was at an end-of-season banquet, when one of the players thanked me in front of everyone and said my photos made up “about 90% of our team’s profile pictures.” That meant a lot. It told me these weren’t just pictures to scroll past — they actually mattered to the kids and families. The idea of turning this into something more really clicked after a varsity soccer game. After the game, a mom came up to me and said, “I looked all over and couldn’t find any way to pay you for these really great treasures.” That sentence stayed with me. I was already spending money on equipment, spending hours editing, and putting a lot of care into the photos — but there really wasn’t a simple way for people who valued the work to support it. That was the moment 603 In Focus started to feel like more than a hobby. The name came together pretty naturally. “603” is New Hampshire — where I live, where I shoot, and where the families I work with are from. “In Focus” is a nod to the actual challenge of photography: getting the right person, in the right moment, sharp and clear. Whether it’s a fast-moving athlete on the court or a senior who feels a little nervous in front of the camera, the goal is the same: make them look confident, natural, and like the best version of themselves. Senior portraits grew from the same place. I’ve always loved clean, confident sports portraits — an athlete in uniform, simple background, great light. Over time, that same approach naturally carried into senior sessions. Different setting, same idea: create images that feel strong, real, and worth keeping. At the end of the day, that’s what I care about most.
